On Patriots - Surviving the Coming Collapse
By Hans K. Jones
A good friend of the family recently presented me with the book Patriots – Surviving the Coming Collapse – a novel of the turbulent near-future, by James Wesley, [sic] Rawles.
It wasn’t too long ago that my friend could best be described as your basic, dyed-in-the-wool, Republican conservative. I will proudly take a bit of the credit for assisting him along the path towards his racial awakening. Loaning books to my friend from my own personal library - books such as The Culture of Critique, by Kevin MacDonald, The Holocaust Industry, by Norman Finkelstein, Which Way Western Man, by William Gayley Simpson and My Awakening, by Dr. David Duke – my friend has gone from very little understanding regarding matters concerning race and the destructive influence wrought by Jewish media control, to a much more appreciative and sophisticated view regarding many of the issues related to white survival.
I guess my friend just wanted to return the favor and share some of his reading material with my family. As he presented me with the book Patriots he lowered his voice to a near whisper and told me that Patriots should be anti-government enough to suit my tastes. At the time I didn’t have the heart to tell my friend that I’m not really anti-government per se, I’m just against our current racially destructive system. While I certainly don’t consider myself an authoritarian type, I also don’t count myself among the fundamentally selfish “down with authority” crowd one so often finds on the fringes of the right wing. You see, I happen to believe that a strong and centralized government is not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself. As long as that strong centralized government is not unnecessarily intrusive into the lives of its citizens; as long as that government allows for individual achievement, and respects the inalienable rights of the individual, then I have no problem with a strong and centralized government in a modern and orderly, white society.
I graciously accepted my friend’s gift of the book, Patriots, and I commenced reading the book almost immediately. It took me a couple of nights to finish reading the book. Before setting the book down and turning off my reading lamp I looked over to my wife and told her that, in the future, I really needed to do a much better job at building understanding.
Now I just needed to find a polite way to tell my friend that Rawles’ book is seriously flawed; his world view, if one can even call it that, is self-serving, sophomoric, and completely unworkable.
From page 340 of the book Patriots – Surviving the Coming Collapse, and I quote: “The Dunlaps invited Teesha and me out to Troy for a two-week visit the summer before the Crash. It was an extension of our honeymoon trip to Yellowstone. It was kind of funny when we got there to Roger’s ranch. You see we had never met face-to-face, or even spoken on the phone – everything was by e-mail, you see – so none of the Templars realized that we were black folks. Roger just said ‘Hey, cyberspace is color blind, and so am I. Welcome!” End quote.
Now I’m not going to waste a whole lot of time criticizing the author’s rampant use of poor grammar or repeatedly chastise him for improper sentence structure, but I will mention that these numerous mistakes do, at times, make for a difficult read.
I will, however, be much more unforgiving as I attempt to point out that, much like his characters, Rawles may be color blind, but he certainly isn’t ashamed to instruct his white readers on how best to behave when it comes to political correctness and our interactions with non-whites. This entire book is rife with Rawles’ own brand of Judeo-Christian, egalitarian ideology.
As I began reading this book I kept waiting for the author to properly develop his characters. Half way into the book it was still hard to distinguish one character from the other. And by the end of the book the characters still seemed as much a mystery to me, as a reader, as they were at the beginning of the book. I can assure you that this will not be my last criticism of Rawles’ book.
Another annoying feature is that the characters; both good and bad; from protagonist to antagonist - all use the same annoying acronyms and silly vernacular. For instance, “TEOTWAWKI” is taken from one of the songs of the alternative music group R.E.M. and means “the end of the world as we know it”. “GOOD” means “get out of dodge.” Fortunately, the book does decipher all of the acronyms and I suppose it is largely a matter of personal taste, but still, at least as far as I was concerned, the character’s use of codes, acronyms and silly sayings tend to distract from the overall story.
More disturbing to the racially aware white is the fact that Rawles’ book is filled to the brim with fundamentally selfish "objectivism", and other infantile and racially destructive ideas as espoused by the late Soviet Jewess, Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand (born Alissa Rosenbaum) has long been admired by anarchist libertarian types who believe that racism is just another form of collectivism. Rand believed that selfishness was a virtue and altruism a vice. The individualist types her writings have spawned view with contempt those who actually concern themselves with the survival and advancement of their race. They consider us to be either foolish suckers, or even worse yet; we are in league with the communists.
Rawles also appears to have had a tough time in combining what really comes across as two separate stories pasted together haphazardly into one book. The first three-quarters of the book deal almost exclusively with a hodgepodge of under-developed characters as they attempt to survive a complete socio-economic collapse. Rawles calls these people patriots, but they just come across as a loose association of multi-cults who have decided to band together and survive the coming collapse. According to Rawles, anyone who reads Ayn Rand books and wishes to survive is nothing less than a patriot. Additionally, the exact reason for the collapse, other than the catch-all of hyper-inflation is never really understood or properly explained.
The first part of this book deals with the movements and machinations of Rawles’ band of “patriots” during the initial collapse and it then follows them through the post collapse. The government is practically non-existent during this first phase of Rawles’ book. There is little or no mention of any attempt by local, state, and federal government to avoid the collapse or to respond with any type of disaster relief. The last part of the book has this loose knit band of survivors fighting the federal government; a government that has finally decided to make an appearance after being absent for 200 plus pages in a 384 page book. The survivors fight this government in a style reminiscent of the 1984 Hollywood movie Red Dawn, with some Ayn Rand malarkey thrown in for good measure.
To Rawles race only seems to be important as a conduit for his delivery of an “embrace diversity” message. While it is very evident that Rawles believes racism is a major religious and societal sin, it’s interesting to note that all blacks, Chinese and Jews in this book are portrayed as inherently good men. And if Rawles intended to portray any of the bad guys in his book as non-white the reader would never be the wiser.
One of the Jewish characters in Rawles’ book wears very thick eyeglasses. Now I don’t know about you, but where I come from thick, coke-bottle lenses in eye glasses usually is a very good indication of poor vision - except for the fact that this Jew has the very best night vision in the entire group. Additionally, this same Jew is so smart that the rest of the Gentiles in the group just can't fathom his intelligence until they actually witness a presentation of his software genius. The one Chinese member of the group is a self professed gun nut and also likes to debate the virtues of “Jeffersonian democracy”. The one white separatist (not a member of the group) finally becomes a “good man” as he learns to live with and fight alongside his fellow man (a black freedom fighter in this instance) regardless of skin color. This formula is just too predictable to make an interesting read.
The author has also gone out of his way to give every one of his main characters a completely unbelievable and sin-free heroic altruism. This from someone who subscribes to the belief that selfishness is a virtue and altruism is a vice.
In one chapter a starving survivor comes across an abandoned cabin in a winter storm. The cabin is loaded with canned food, but he does not open and eat a single can of food as that would be stealing, and we all know stealing is a sin. Instead, this poor refugee makes do by hunting wild game. He heats the cabin and cooks using and then replenishing wood from the owner’s woodpile. When the storm finally breaks he ultimately leaves the cabin in better shape; cleaner and with more cut firewood than when he found it. He even leaves a bit of junk silver coins for the cabin’s owner. Now I can’t find any argument in being a good guest, but surely those silver coins could have paid for a can or two of food in a critical survival situation.
It also came across as hypocritical that the supposedly freedom loving survivors had absolutely no compunctions against stopping, searching, and even executing those who came within close proximity of their property. Yet these same characters struggled with what appeared to be made-up dilemmas as it concerned using seized supplies and weapons from those who they felt were doing wrong. In a survival situation, the whole thing just comes across as contrived, completely unnatural, and completely unrealistic.
The author also goes to great lengths to justify and explain his character's reasoning when employing deadly force. For instance: Two individuals are approached and detained. It is determined that they are the lowest of the low; looters. As if that weren’t bad enough we then discover that they each have a copy of the Communist Manifesto packed in with their belongings. Yes, they are both Communist Party members. Still not ready to blast them to smithereens our heroes finally discover human body parts in their bags. You guessed right, these two miscreants are nothing less than cannibal, Communist looters. Okay, now we can finally fire away and kill the bastards. The lines are clearly drawn - almost cartoon style - all throughout Rawles’ book.
Rawles juvenile world view finally becomes apparent as his book ultimately suggests that if we could somehow just restore the Constitution, re-establish the gold standard, and then repeal, outlaw, and amplify an assortment of constitutional amendments, then everything would be fine for another two-hundred years or so. What these naive and short-sighted self proclaimed “patriots” (right-wing hucksters is a more suitable term) fail to realize is that the Constitution has been subverted fairly and squarely, and it has been subverted using ordained system rules. Demographics and the dynamics of the electorate have changed. Attempting to return to an earlier time may appeal to all of the libertarian armchair commandos out there, but it will not solve our problems. And even if we were somehow able to restore things to an earlier time we would sooner or later wind up right back in this same mess all over again.
Patriots, by James Wesley, [sic] Rawles may offer an escape for those who subscribe to Ayn Rand’s egocentric and childish way of looking at the world, but I assure you that this novel is at the very least sadly lacking in realism, answers and substance, and is at most just another anti-white work of fiction specifically geared towards whites who happen to be concerned about individual and family survival in these most uncertain times. I wasted a bit of my time and energy in reading this novel, but I have learned a valuable lesson. I have learned that I need to do a much better job at building understanding.
I know some of you may be asking yourselves why I would devote a significant portion of my time reviewing such an obscure book. Well, my reasons are two-fold. First, as we grow closer to the tipping point, many white Americans are going to be seeking out and reading books pertaining to personal survival in post collapse scenarios. Secondly, we need to ensure that the perceptive white minority is not confused by hucksters wishing to make a quick buck while offering their own brand of rehashed “love thy mugger” sentiment. Let’s instead take this opportunity to lead those perceptive whites toward a more natural, realistic and upwards path.
In the fiction category perhaps a better starting point for true white patriots interested in survival in these most uncertain times would be to read the book, The Turner Diaries by the late Dr. William Pierce. Dr. Pierce wrote the book, The Turner Diaries under the pseudonym Andrew Macdonald. Pierce’s book is decidedly pro-white and is filled with a much more honest realism. Unfortunately, with each new passing day Pierce’s book, The Turner Diaries is also proving to be chillingly prophetic.
